1/5/22 Winter Training pays off for Harriers at Belfast Marathon

May Day (Sunday 1st May) saw County Antrim Harriers out in force at the 40th Belfast City Marathon; with thirteen Harriers completing the full distance; nine members running in charity relay teams, and many other members providing support and smiles around the course.  Special mention to Shelley White and Emma Hill on their marathon debuts and to Margaret Beattie on running her first marathon in 31years!

As the runners headed out from Stormont Estate for their 26.2 mile tour of the city, this year following a revised route, the rain clouds cleared and the temperature rose slightly.  Spring marathon runners are made in the winter, and the Harriers performances are a testament to their dedication, sacrifice and hard work during cold winter training runs.  First home was Simon McDowell in a superb 3.2:25 PB, quickly followed by Aaron Anderson 3.23:37 PB, Mandy Wilson 3.41:42 PB, Stu Gowans 3.44:15, Alexandra McLaughlin 3.45:12 and Patricia Hamill 3.47:09 PB.  Also impressing were Andrena Berry 4.08:16 and Irene Downey 4.19:39.  Friends and training buddies Anouska Holend and Sharon Kerr crossed the line together (4.51:42); as did fancy-dressed Louise Smart and Claire Oliphant 4.57:12. Strong performances were also given by Margaret Beattie (4.55:14); and first time marathoners Emma Hill and Shelley White (5.31:57).  All the Harriers really appreciated the Club support around the course.
